Last Friday, I talked about the basics of cryptocurrency at the BASE, a HKUST student-run organization supporting entrepreneurship. I was surprised that more than 50 students spent their precious happy hour to learn about something quite technical and complicated. Most of them stayed until I finished the whole presentation. Some even raised tough questions and triggered a heated discussion. I really like to express my appreciation to all audience for your attention and questions. Most importantly, I am so grateful that the BASE believed in me that we had never met before but still offered me an opportunity to present such a new topic.

Why did I devote time to prepare PowerPoint slides and present in front of so many people instead of just enjoying my last few months of being a student? I love teaching. I still remember the tutors’ comment when I was taking the Junior Expedition Assessor course. All students were required to present on a hiking topic and I chose “coordinate system”. After my presentation, tutors said I should not draw too many graphs on the whiteboard but they did feel my passion for teaching. However, I didn’t know whether I was qualified to talk about cryptocurrency until I heard of Student-Initiated Course program at the University of Maryland. It allows students to design, develop, and teach their own courses under the guidance of a faculty advisor. I found this idea quite attractive and sent it to my friend who used to work in the BASE. He suggested me to ask the BASE whether they wanted someone to talk about cryptocurrency or not. Then, I tried and they were interested!

If you don’t try, you never know!
